The new National Library was inaugurated in 1974 during the ceremonies of the traditional meeting held by the General
Council on the feast of St. Thomas. Its holdings comprised 2,500 volumes, which came from the library of the Casa de
la Vall, from the Catalan Book Exhibition, from the donations of some publishers and from its own acquisitions.
The Andorran press announced the new library's opening hours for the public on 10 March 1975.
In the following decade the Library came to be housed in two different places. Those were the years of consolidation of
a service that was offered to a society that was undergoing rapid economic and demographic development.
This was a twofold service: on the one hand it was a public library that was constantly increasing its general bibliographical
holdings, and on the other it was a national library devoted to the acquisition of the Andorran publishing production
and of old books.
The Legal Deposit Service was created in 1980 and the Andorran publications were integrated in the ISBN
(International Standard Book Number) system in 1987.
The floods of 1982 entailed an important setback, damaging or completely ruining a considerable part of the bibliographical
holdings, which called for a large effort to recover the most valuable books.
The Library was removed again to a new location in 1986.
The book holdings continued to expand during this period. The works that the National Distance Education University (UNED)
recommends to its students in the bibliographies of its courses were acquired and the BN received the private library of
the French medievalist Prof. Philippe Wolff. The Videotheque Service was created as well.
Moreover, the Library became a more dynamic institution with the implementation of a broad set of activities, including the
first Christmas story contest and diverse children's programmes.
The loan service was improved and the consultation of books was simplified through the computerization of the catalogue.
